Community Kids OT

Community Kids OT is a pediatric occupational therapy practice in Comox Valley. Established in 2023 as a mobile practice, they quickly grew and settled into their cozy brick-and-mortar location in Downtown Courtenay. The space ticked many boxes but its compact size of just under 200 square feet posed some challenges. Especially considering that therapy sessions often switch between obstacle courses and table work. They knew they would need to be smart with their design and furniture choices to make the most of the space.

Cynthia, owner and occupational therapist, contracted Kauri Woodworks to design a few pieces for the clinic. Her request? Functional pieces that could withstand the wear and tear of children, while maintaining the calming, neutral aesthetic they wanted to achieve.

One of the first priorities was creating storage that kept the therapy supplies organized and out of sight. We had to get creative here as there were electrical panels that couldn't be blocked. The solution was a sleek, built-in cabinet crafted from durable, finished plywood. We opted for a push-lock mechanism for a clean look — and to make it more challenging for curious little hands to open! Custom shelves were measured to fit larger tools like a peanut therapy ball and storage containers, ensuring every item had its place.

Next, they needed a space-saving solution for table activities. We designed a modern, fold-down table that blends seamlessly into the clinic's environment. When folded up, it doubles as a wall-mounted frame, and when folded down, it becomes a spacious, work surface. The whiteboard tabletop adds an extra layer of versatility, allowing kids and therapists to write directly on it.

For the clinic's waiting area, we crafted a simple, yet elegant two-seater slatted bench. Its clean lines and natural finish complement the building's decor, offering a comfortable spot for clients to wait before sessions.

We're so happy with how these custom pieces came together. Each piece was intentionally designed to meet both functional and aesthetic needs. The result is a space that feels open and inviting, proving that even small spaces can have a big impact.

"As an occupational therapist, I am always thinking about the functionality of spaces and how our surroundings can affect how we feel. Kauri Woodworks knocked it out of the park with their design. William measured our therapy equipment to make sure everything would fit. The fold-down table is genius and a total hit with the kids. The pieces all fit together so nicely. We get compliments from families all the time about our space!" —CL
